Hammer Toes

Indication

As the terminology implies, a hammer toe is a deformity where the affected toe is bent like a hammer. This can cause pain and difficulty with shoes and can lead to problems with pressure problems over the deformity with rubbing and possible damage to the skin. Where simple measures such as pressure relieving plasters and shoe wear modifications fail to achieve the desired outcome, surgical treatment may become necessary.

Operation

The correction of such deformities requires shortening and straightening of the affected toe/toes. This is a procedure performed usually under a general anaesthetic and the shortened and straightened toes are secured with wires that protrude through the toes until the bones are soundly fixed which normally takes up to six weeks.
